Vitamin D3 and vitamin K2 complement each other in their functions and are jointly involved in many processes in the body. Both vitamins work together, particularly in maintaining healthy bones, muscle function, and the normal function of the immune system.

Vitamin D – The “sunshine vitamin”

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that the body largely produces itself – but only with sufficient UVB radiation. Between October and March, the sun's intensity in Central Europe is usually not sufficient for the skin to synthesize enough vitamin D. Foods such as oily fish, eggs, and mushrooms contain some vitamin D, but usually only cover 10–20% of the daily requirement. Supplementation may be beneficial in these cases.

According to the German Nutrition Society (DGE), the recommended guideline value for adults is 20 µg (800 IU) per day. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) sets the tolerable upper limit for adults at 100 µg (4,000 IU) per day.

An optimal blood level of the marker 25-hydroxyvitamin D is approximately 75 nmol/l. Levels below 30 nmol/l are considered critical.

Functions of vitamin D in the body

Vitamin D contributes, among other things, to:

  • normal absorption and utilization of calcium and phosphorus,
  • the maintenance of normal bones and teeth,
  • normal muscle function,
  • normal function of the immune system,

Vitamin K2 – Targeted calcium

Vitamin K2 gehört ebenfalls zu den fettlöslichen Vitaminen und ist für den Kalziumtransport im Körper relevant. Es aktiviert sogenannte Gla-Proteine, die Kalzium gezielt in die Knochen und das Muskelgewebe transportieren und gleichzeitig eine Ablagerung in den Blutgefäßen regulieren. Gute Quellen sind tierische Produkte sowie fermentierte Lebensmittel wie Sauerkraut oder Natto. Die körpereigene Produktion durch Darmbakterien reicht meist nicht aus, um den Bedarf zu decken.

Das Zusammenspiel von Vitamin D3 & K2

Vitamin D regt die Bildung von Transportproteinen an, die Kalzium im Körper binden – Vitamin K2 aktiviert diese Proteine, sodass Kalzium gezielt eingebaut werden kann. Beide Vitamine ergänzen sich somit im Kalziumstoffwechsel und sind vor allem für den Erhalt der Knochengesundheit relevant.

Eine kombinierte Einnahme, zum Beispiel über D3-K2-Tropfen, kann sinnvoll sein – insbesondere in Zeiten geringer Sonnenlichtexposition oder bei erhöhtem Bedarf.

Überdosierung: Was ist zu beachten?

Die Einnahme hoher Dosen von Vitamin D sollte nur nach einem ärztlich überprüften Blutwert erfolgen. Eine Überdosierung von Vitamin D kann gesundheitsschädlich sein, vor allem wenn es langfristig zu einer überhöhten Kalziumkonzentration im Blut kommt.
